I grew up in a household where we listened to classical music most of the day. The classical music station was always on in the background, and my mom would sometimes play her records from different symphonies and concertos.
My dad was a Beatles fan, so once in a while we would listen to those, too.
But most of the time, it was classical music. My brother and I could hum a wide variety of classical music since we were little, and yet, neither of us really grew up to care for pop music.
We heard it, of course. In movies, on the radio, when we were at friends’ houses, etc. But we never turned it on on our own at home. We would listen to classical music. I think I listen to more pop culture songs than when I was a teenager, which is wonderful.
And still, even when I can recognize the tune of what I call normal music, I can’t tell you with certainty who plays it, nor do I know the lyrics.
But classical music. I know about that way more.
And then one day, my dad bought an LP with movie music, and our world changed forever.
